EUROPEAN SUCCESS FOR KELLS SWIMMERS
Kells Swimming Club members Eleanor Murray and Fintan Bray represented Ireland at the European Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in Loano, Italy from 8th to 12th November, 2015.
Some 20 countries took part in the Championships.
Fintan, swimming in his first major championship came home with a silver heat medal in the 25m backstroke.
Eleanor won the silver medal in the 1,500m Freestyle in a new personal best (PB) time of 28:53:94 taking an amazing 3 minutes 3 seconds off her previous best. Eleanor finished second to the reigning European Champion from Italy, who set a new European record in winning the race, and finished ahead of swimmers from Portugal, Spain, Kosovo, Sweden and the United Kingdom in claiming the silver medal for Team Ireland.
Eleanor added to her success by also taking silver in the 800m Freestyle and bronze in the 200m Butterfly events.
Eleanor and Fintan train regularly with Kells Swimming Club where they are members of the mainstream Competitive Squad. They are regular competitors in Swim Ireland/Leinster Galas in the NAC and get great support from the mainstream swimming community.
Eleanor and Fintan will now, after a well- earned rest, start their preparation for the World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships to be held in Florence, Italy next July as part of the first ever global Trisome Games where over 1,000 athletes with Down Syndrome and team staff will assemble for this historic event.
